In November 2024, the UICOS sent out its newest publication to its members. In “Il nuoto Olimpico 1896–1960”, author Mario Capuano introduces readers to the fascinating history of Olympic swimming.

Over several decades, Capuano has gathered an impressive collection of Olympic memorabilia — from diplomas, certificates, medals, postcards, and autographs to philatelic items. His passion for collecting and the Olympic Games is clearly reflected in this 212-page book.

The journey begins with the very first Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, where Olympic swimming was born. The book then traces the sport’s evolution up until 1960, highlighting key developments and events — such as the rise of different nations, the interruption of the Games by the World Wars, the emergence of women and Paralympic athletes in swimming, and the legendary rivalry between the USA and Australia.

The book has also been placed under the patronage of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), a recognition emphasized in the foreword by CONI President Giovanni Malagó.

This publication is a great example of what is possible in the world of Olympic collecting — a deep dive into both history and heritage.
