The Slogan Cancellations for the 1920 Summer Olympic Games
Just after the WWI, the International Olympic Committee held the 18th IOC Session in Lausanne. During the Session, the host city of the 7th Summer Olympic Games was decided. In 5th April 1919, it was announced that Antwerp would host the 7th Summer Olympic Games in August 1920.
Aimed at promoting the Olympic Games, a slogan cancellation / postmark was used by the postal authority of Belgium. The cancellation was consisted of a circular date stamp on the left and a slogan box on the right. The CDS depicted the date, Month, Year and the region it was used. Roman number was used for the month, while Arabic number was used for the Day and Year. For the slogan box, it was roughly measured by 20mm in height times 50mm in width. The wording VIIE / OLYMPIADE was shown on the left. On RHS, the wordings “Antwerp / August to September / 1920” were shown in 2 languages.
This exhibit introduces all the 10 types of slogans being used at that time by the postal authority pf Belgium. It tells this story I the perspective of postal history. The earliest / last usage, postal rates and varieties in usages are discussed in this exhibit.
