Dive into the heart of the captivating history of the Sorbonne, this emblematic center of knowledge, which also played a crucial role in the French and international sports movement.

Themes: Living Heritage and Sports Heritage

This year, we are exploring two exciting themes: the “Living Heritage”, which embodies the rich academic and cultural tradition of the Sorbonne, and the “Heritage of Sport”, which reveals the major influence of this institution on the evolution of sport. and the Olympic Games.

The Sorbonne: A Pillar of the Sports Movement Did you know that the Sorbonne has played a crucial role in the development of sport in France and around the world? In April 1892, the first National Congress of Physical Education was held here, marking the beginning of the integration of sports activity into republican education. But the most significant event remains the vote for the reestablishment of the modern Olympic Games, carried by Pierre de Coubertin. After five days of intensive debate, more than 2,000 international guests gathered in the large amphitheater, the Salle Gréard, to vote in favor of this historic initiative on June 23, 1894.
