TO SURVIVRE WITH HONOUR … SPORTS AND OLYMPIC SPIRIT AMONG THE POLISH OFFICERS PRISONERS OF WAR IN GERMAN CAMPS 1939-1945
The collection is a set of unique documents proving the durability and immortality of the Olympic ideals even in extreme conditions of war and many years of captivity. Polish officers prisoners of war locked in camps by the German Wehrmacht for almost 6 years were fully aware that the condition for surviving captivity was to maintain physical and mental fitness. The Polish athletes and Olympians from Amsterdam 1928 and Berlin 1936 who were among the prisoners of war were able to convey, despite the tragic camp conditions, faith in Olympic values and convince their fellow captives to organize the “Olympics behind the barbed wire” in the two camps in 1944. These events and these unique documents are an important part of the Olympic legacy and the international community deserves to know them.
