Passing of Maurizio Tecardi (1937 – 2016)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maurizio Tecardi on October 19, 2016. Maurizio was one of the pioneers of Olympic and sports thematic philately. A friend to so many of us, Maurizio made an invaluable contribution to the development of Olympic collecting thanks to his vast knowledge and organizational talents.

He will always remain in our memory.

The AICO Executive Board

Maurizio Tecardi was a great collector, adviser, and expert who promoted important international exhibits in Italy and was one of the leaders in launching organized Olympic philately.

A proponent of thematic philately, he was one of the founders of FIPO, the international association of Olympic Philately together with Giuseppe Sabelli Fioretti and Manfred Bergman. He successfully organized sports philatelic exhibitions around the world, including the first Olymphilex in Lausanne in 1985.

He also created and founded UICOS (Italian Union of Olympic and Sports Collectors); took an active part in USFI (Italian Philatelic Press Association); and was a philatelic journalist for Italian specialized magazines for CIFT (Italian Thematic Philately Centre), UFI and the Italian Philatelic Council.

Finally he took part as a juror in major sports exhibitions: Olymphilex 87, Genova 92, Italy 98, 2009 Italy, Israel, Korea, Argentina, Olymphilex Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and, his last, Beijing 2008.

His constant presence cannot be forgotten at the many national and International exhibitions and demonstrations through Romafil 2014, after which he retired.

Always available to assist the new generation of philatelists, he never hesitated to provide an opinion on a philatelic piece. He loved Olympic collecting in its many forms: the Olympic Museum in Lausanne were the recipients of his monumental collection of postcards from all Olympic Games.

Maurizio also contributed to thematic philately as a delegate in helping define thematic philately regulations for the many different areas of specialization.

And finally, Maurizio Tecardi was an expert in postal history and marcophily.
